Lately, I’ve been so full of gratitude for my life that I could burst. I feel so lucky and blessed, and I don’t want to take any of it for granted. Every day, I’m thankful for the big things: my family, our health, a house that I love and feel safe in, good food to eat. But I also try to be cognizant of all the ‘small delights’ that grace my life too. Here are a select few:
- Monsoon rains
- Full moons
- Phone calls with my sister
- Bank folded bills
- Polarized sunglasses
- Green chili season
- Hikes with our dogs
- Claire’s idiolect*
- Cormac’s smile
- Friday night family movie nights
- 15 free meals per semester at the campus dining hall
- The buzz of a hummingbird
- A squeeze of lemon in a glass of ice-cold fizzy water
- Being on a horse with friends
- A back scratch
- Spotting a coyote trotting across the road
- Claire’s genuine laugh
- Cormac’s wrinkly peach-fuzz head
- Fires in the woodstove
- Swimming holes
- Hot apple cider with ice cream
- College friends
- Moon shadows
- Family dance parties in the kitchen
- The sleepsack my sister made
- Claire’s letter to Santa
- Cormac’s proto-giggle
- Dark chocolate
- Crispin’s voice
- Mornings reading to my kids in bed
- A gripping historical fiction book
- Hot showers
- Coyotes howling at night
- Our antique cradle
*my current favorites are “our chother/their chother” and “magaflying glass”
What are the small delights in your life?
All of these are so lovely! I’m also thankful for those free meals!
